This is a fairly rare variety of bush that grows on Udan Shan (one of the peaks near the village of Feng Huang). The name is associated with the shape of the leaves, which have fairly large teeth that are often compared to a hand saw.
Jiu Duo Zi delights with unexpected aroma components in addition to the usual and expected berry and tropical fruit notes. The dry leaves reveal unexpected hops and beer notes, and the brewed tea sometimes has hints of hot banana jam. The interplay of aromas is truly fascinating and presents a surprise every time. The taste is enveloping, whole and quite delicate for a Dan Cong, although it can certainly be brewed strong. The flavour notes are reminiscent of the distinct bitterness found in craft hoppy beer. The colour of the infusion deserves a special mention: at the beginning of the tea drinking session, it is pinkish, and by the end, it has taken on an amber hue, beautifully complementing the colours of autumn.
An inspiring tea.
